Pelican Park Castine Center and Fontainebleau State Park

The Northshore Naturalist Weekend Workshop is an quick study of the natural world in Southeast Louisiana. This program includes a mix of classroom instruction and guided field instruction.

No experience or prior knowledge required! Anybody with an interest in the natural world of Southeast Louisiana is encouraged to attend. This program is intended to stoke curiousity and foster an interest in the nature around us.

The classroom portion will take place at the Pelican Park Castine Center on Saturday, November 21st. The field portion will take place on the Fontainebleau State Park Cane Bayou Trail on Sunday, November 22nd.

Day One:
Saturday, Novermber 21st (Pelican Park Castine Center)
9:00-9:15am: Introductions, course objectives.
9:15-10:00am: Natural History of St. Tammany/Louisiana Geography & Native Habitats
10:10-11:00am: Venomous Snakes of Louisiana
11:00-11:45am: Basics of Birdwatching
11:45-12:30pm: Lunch (Provided, please let us know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions)
12:30-1:00pm: Insects
1:00-1:45pm: Plants & Invasive Species
1:45-2:00pm: Citizen Science/Wrap Up

Day Two:
Sunday, November 22nd (Fontainebleau State park)
8:00am: Meet by Visitor's Center
8:15am: Depart down Cane Bayou Trail.
Day two will be spent entirely on the Cane Bayou Trail at Fontainebleau State Park. The total distance will be 4 miles round trip, and the class can expect to move at a naturalist's pace of 1 mph. The day will wrap up around noon.

Binocular rental and lunch on Saturday provided with registration.

Please bring with you:
• A notebook and a curious mind!
• Long sleeves shirts and pants are preferred for hikes
• Water bottle
• Outdoor hiking shoes/boots (no open-toed shoes please)
• Snacks
