- **Event Description**: Making quantum technologies accessible to everyone by providing an introduction to the fundamental concepts.About this EventSpeakerDr Masoud GhalaiiSynopsisQuantum technologies are rapidly transforming the landscape of computation and secure communication. This talk provides an accessible introduction to the fundamental concepts of quantum information for students, academics, and professionals interested in computing and mathematics, with no prior background in quantum technologies assumed. We will explore the core principles underlying quantum systems - superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem - and discuss how they give rise to capabilities unavailable in classical computing.Building on these foundations, the talk will outline the current status of quantum computing, including milestones such as quantum supremacy, and discuss emerging approaches to securing communication in a post-quantum world. It will also examine how quantum computing challenges today’s cryptographic security and introduce key quantum protocols, including quantum teleportation and quantum key distribution.About the speakerDr Masoud Ghalaii is a Lecturer in Quantum Information at Manchester Metropolitan University. He received his PhD in Quantum Communications from the University of Leeds in 2019 and subsequently held research positions in quantum technologies at the University of York and the University of Leeds (2019–2024), contributing to major collaborative projects including the UK Quantum Communications Hub, the EU CiViC project, and Cisco Quantum initiatives. His research focuses on applying quantum information science and quantum optics to the development of emerging quantum technologies, particularly quantum communication networks and quantum cryptosystems. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to the quantum research community through organising workshops, editing special issues, and serving on programme committees for international conferences. Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over. This meeting is conducted in accordance with the BCS Code of Conduct for Meetings.BCS is a membership organisation.
