Learn about the unique score, symbols and vocalisation methods of Cantonese opera.

About this Event

Join esea ArtClub from 11 am on Saturday 21st February for a complimentary creative workshop tailored for East and Southeast Asian elders (aged 50 and over). We'll be welcoming both new and existing ArtClub members to come together for art-based activities in a Cantonese Opera Singing workshop.

Led in Cantonese by Kamling Fung and Yuen Wah Leung, participants will delve into the fundamentals of Cantonese opera, including ā€˜Gongche notation,’ ā€˜Dingban,’ and various vocal techniques.

During this session, participants will be guided through the fundamentals of Cantonese opera, including Gongche notation, Dingban, and essential vocal techniques. The workshop will focus on the classic repertoire ā€œThe Purple Hairpinā€ — Picking Up the Hairpin, a Fated Encounter.

Set during the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year—also celebrated as Chinese Valentine’s Day—the story follows a chance meeting between the male and female protagonists on this romantic occasion. Love blossoms at first sight, unfolding into a deeply moving and unforgettable love story.

Materials and light refreshments will be provided throughout the workshop. Attendance is free of charge, but due to limited capacity, advance booking is essential to secure your place.

This programme is part of esea ArtClub, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
