- **Event Description**: The City of Maitland’s annual Free Tree Giveaway will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Venue on Lake Lily, 641 S. Maitland Avenue. 

The event will give away 50, 30-gallon trees to city residents including willow oaks, red maples, Dahoon holly, Japanese blueberry and fringetree. Offerings were selected this year to introduce more diversity, colors and mostly smaller sizes that will complement bigger trees such as the older live oaks found in many Maitland residential neighborhoods.

Residents must be present with a vehicle capable to safely transport the tree - preferably a truck. One tree per household. Recipients must provide identification and proof of residency with address. Trees are offered on a first-come basis without reservations.

Drivers must stay in vehicles. Just pull up and city staff will load your choice of tree. A certified arborist will answer your questions about the right type of tree, care needs and best planting location.

Red Maple - Found through most of the state, the native red maple features red fall foliage that is very inviting to birds. At maturity, red maples can be 60 to 75 feet tall and 25 to 35 feet wide.

Willow Oak – A fast-growing type of oak shade tree with long, light-green, willow-like leaves that turn bright yellow before they fall. These trees attract birds and squirrels. 

Japanese Blueberry – Can grow as a bush, but will be provided to grow as a tree, limbed up to expose a tree trunk. This slow-growing, low-maintenance evergreen grows about 30 feet tall with white flowers in the spring. 

Dahoon Holly – A small, versatile evergreen that grows about 30 feet tall with deep, green leaves and bright red berries that attract wildlife. Small clusters of white flowers bloom in the spring. 

Fringetree – A beautiful, small deciduous tree that grows up to 20 feet tall and bursts with lots of fragrant white flowers in the spring showing long narrow petals that earn the tree its nickname as “old man’s beard”.
