Wenn La Dispute ein neues Album ankündigen, ist das kein bloßes Musikereignis. Es ist ein literarischer Akt, ein filmisches Kapitel, ein Seelenprotokoll. Mit „No One Was Driving the Car“, ihrem ersten Album seit sechs Jahren, geht die Band aus Grand Rapids, Michigan einen Weg weiter, den sie selbst mit Worten pflastert, die so zersetzend wie tröstlich sind. Noch vor der Veröffentlichung am 05. September erscheint das Werk in Etappen, dramaturgisch gegliedert in fünf Akte – zuletzt „Act IV“, bestehend aus drei neuen Songs, darunter das eindrückliche „Top-Sellers Banquet“. 

Die Geschichte, die sich durch das Album zieht, ist kein lineares Narrativ. Es ist eher ein inneres Tagebuch, ein Erinnerungsstrom, der sich durch Zeit, Raum und Bewusstsein schlängelt. Ein Mann blickt zurück auf sein Leben, tastet sich durch Schlüsselmomente seiner Jugend, Verlust, familiäre Spannungen, spirituelle Verwirrung. Die Sprache: radikal intim. Die Musik: post-hardcore im Dialog mit barocker Erzählkunst, mal flüsternd, mal berstend.
