Why Cry is the musical union of Minneapolis artists Dan Dukich and Chelsie Newhard. Although officially formed in 2025, Dukich and Newhard started their creative discourse years before, bonding over their admiration of visionary songwriters like Judee Sill, The Roches, and Shira Small. Individually, both have spent years lending their talents to countless musical and theatrical endeavors, but in this new collaboration, these seasoned storytellers have found the perfect home.

Why Cry’s debut album, How Now, is an eccentric amalgamation of Americana balladry, perverse folk hymns, and cryptic torch songs. The arrangements are exquisitely lean, leaving room for Dukich and Newhards’ sumptuous vocal harmonies to hold the foreground. Recorded almost entirely live over the course of one week, How Now offers a humanistic immediacy, inviting the listener in close to retrieve tenderness from life’s absurdities
