Play is children’s work (Montessori). "Poetry is serious play" (Frost). Yet “we have no word for strict pleasure” (Gilbert). In this workshop we will play our way into poems. We’ll use rules, chance, movement, collaboration, exercises from improv and street songs, to pleyen—“rejoice, be glad”—and pflegen—“take care of, cultivate.” How can we play with what troubles us? What are the rhetorical possibilities of a joke? If you rendered your city, or this time, as a game board, what would go on the squares? What happens when we take the language most often used for conveying information, language demoted to content, and translate it back into primeval or pulsing sound? 

“Leisure is the basis of culture” (Pieper). Come be at your leisure, and write something gorgeous, and strange. Writers of all genres and backgrounds welcome.
