During the tour, participants will consider the different layers of government—from federal to local—that shape our everyday lives, as well as discuss the ways Wisconsinites have contributed to the democratic process. The conversation will illustrate how individuals and groups have historically engaged with issues they cared about, shaping the communities around them for generations to come. In addition, the tour will spotlight democracy-forward movements that impacted state and national politics as well as the leaders and legislation that expanded what it means to live in a democratic society. ???? ???’?? ?????????? A guided tour of various downtown Madison locations with themes of democracy, civics, legislation, and local and state leadership An appreciation for the ways historic Wisconsin leaders—as well as everyday community members—made their voices heard and participated in civic life, and in doing so, acted upon their values and beliefs Insight into how society stakeholders—from community members to politicians—collaborated on issues to make change An understanding of how Wisconsin’s story is part of America's story, and how Wisconsinites have responded to issues and conflicts on the national and international stages ???? An active, community-focused space that hosts school groups, pop-up exhibits, author talks, public programs and more; located in the US Bank Building on Madison's Capitol Square. History Maker Space 1 S. Pinckney Street Madison, WI 53703 ???? ?????? ??? ?? The tour will start in front of the U.S. Bank Plaza building, located at 1 S. Pinckney Street and facing the Wisconsin State Capitol. The tour ends at the Library Mall in front of the Wisconsin Historical Society Headquarters building (816 State Street). The tour route is approximately 1 mile in length. It is paved but does include some hilly terrain. Bring appropriate walking attire. Wearing comfortable shoes are strongly recommended. On the day of the tour, please arrive at the U.S. Bank Plaza approximately 15 minutes prior to tour start time to allow for check in with a staff member. The tour meeting location is in front of the main glass doors located on S. Pinckney Street (these doors enter into the main lobby of the U.S. Bank Building). Tour participants are encouraged to bring water with them as the tour will be taking place outdoors and shade will vary. Walking tours will happen rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, consider bringing an umbrella. There are public parking options available in downtown Madison. There is a public parking garage, Capitol Square North Garage, located within two blocks of the tour’s starting location. Between the starting location and the ending location, there are additional public parking garages including the State Street Capitol Parking Garage and the State Street Campus Garage. There is also street parking information on the City of Madison website.
