About the event

Cafe CODA Presents Hanah Jon Taylor
8 PM | $25

Hanah Jon Taylor has received critical acclaim for his unique and lyrical persona on flute, soprano saxophone, and wind synthesizer, as a true ‘Student of Improvisation’. With a career spanning over 50 years, has worked as a bandleader, sideman, and educator with many noted jazz and creative music artists and cultural initiatives.

Upon completing his studies at Southern Illinois University with a Master of Science degree in Music Therapy, he returned to Chicago to be inducted into the Association for the advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Hanah soon joined the group Infinite Spirit Music, with pianist Soji Adebayo, bassist Josef Ben Israel, percussionist Averyael Ra and woodwindist Light Henry
Huff. In 1979, Hanah made his first appearance in Europe, performing with pianist Burton Greene at the B.I.M. Huis in Amsterdam. While there, he formed his first ‘European Ensemble’,
with pianist Antonello Salis, bassist Roberto Bellatalla and drummer Sonny Murray. Returning to Chicago, Hanah briefly joined the Colson Unity Troupe with Adegoke and Iqua
Colson and in 1983, to then leave for a three-year union with the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (EHE), touring most of Western Europe and Scandinavia with percussionist Kahil El-Zabar and multi-reedist Edward Wilkerson. During this time, Mr. Taylor began to assemble his own trio, Everyday Heroes, with bassist Donald Rafeal Garrett and percussionist Steve McCall.

In 1986, Hanah co-led an avant-garde jazz ensemble to perform at the 2nd Annual Peoples’ International Music Festival in Havana, Cuba. With the passing of both McCall and Garrett, Everyday Heroes re-emerged in 1987 with pianist Calvin Coco Brunson, bassist Cecile Savage, and percussionist Toby Williams. By the end of decade, Hanah appeared with the group Gibraltar,
featuring percussionist Denis Fournier and violinist Frederic Tari.
Maintaining his career as both artist and educator, Hanah taught courses in Contemporary American Music History and World Music at Madison Media Institute from 2007 through 2014. In recent years, he has led his latest ensemble, the Hanah Jon Taylor Artet, featuring Dushun Mosley on drums and has appeared and/or recorded with bassist Malachi Favors, percussionist
Vincent Davis, flutist Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid, bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Reggie Nicholson and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Presently, Hanah is the Owner/operator of Cafe CODA, a premier Madison Jazz venue Hanah Jon Taylor plays Henri Selmer MarkVI Tenor and Series III Soprano Saxophones, the Muramatsu EXIII Flute, and the Yamaha WX11 Wind Controller. He is a recording artist with Tiger Fish Records (Chicago), Fish Eye Records (Madison), and Rogue Art Records (Paris).
