The jewel in the crown is Vivaldi’s Recorder Concerto in C minor (RV 441). Around it, a programme of equal distinction: Montanari’s Concerto for flautino, two violins and continuo, Heinichen’s Ouverture Suite for strings and his Sinfonia from the opera Mario, Fasch’s Concerto for recorder and strings, and Valentini’s Concerto for four violins, viola and cello.

Roman virtuosi, Dresden’s Hofkapellmeister, a Zerbst court composer — all of them caught by the Italian style and making it entirely their own. Expressive melody, dramatic flair, opulent ornamentation, and the perpetual give-and-take of solo and tutti.

Debus, one of the leading recorder players of her generation, and La Serenissima make it sparkle.
