Notions of landscape are explored by Liz Hancock and Maree Quinn in Walking the Land. Their paintings challenge perceptions through moments of tension, suspension and meditation. Grounded in an observational dialogue, their works invite viewers to reflect on their own inner landscapes and how this shapes their connections to the natural world.

Quinn seeks to examine her experience of walking, immersed in te Taiao, intrigued by geological and ecological processes as the land constantly changes. Her paintings hum and pulse, colours flex and mark-making jostles, as she explores those small moments of intersection that exist between memory, sound and place. Hancock’s work draws from the personal, embracing the contemplative and reflective. Living with a constantly changing view of estuary, land and sky, Hancock reflects this in the landscape of the human faces she paints.

Lyttelton based artist, Maree Quinn explores concepts of memory and place, perception and sound, in a creative practice that ranges from painting and drawing to soundscapes and time-based media. With a Masters in Fine Arts, Quinn has exhibited visual and sound based work in both Australia and New Zealand. Her art works are held in private collections in both countries with film work lodged in the NZ Arts Council Archive.

Liz Hancock investigates the figurative within an abstracted notion of landscape, seeking a meditative approach to the spatial connections that she finds. After graduating from the Canterbury School of Fine Arts, Hancock took on the role Head of the Art Department at a secondary school, alongside a part-time practice. She has continued to show locally in Christchurch and her artwork is held both here and overseas.
