A little garden history:

In 1937, after the Miller-Claytor house had been moved from it's original location and rebuilt on the site where it currently rests, the Lynchburg Garden Club enlisted renowned landscape architect Charles F. Gillette to design the back garden. It was planted in 1940, and Gillette's European-inspired, yet uniquely Virginian, brand of eclecticism is still lovingly maintained by the Lynchburg Garden Club today. 

In fact, in 1947 in recognition of their on-going care of the Miller-Claytor Garden, The Lynchburg Garden Club received the Massie Medal for Distinguished Achievement, the oldest and most prestigious award given by The Garden Club of Virginia.
