Castro, 6 February | Event in Luxembourg | AllEvents.in Castro
António Ferreira / Nuno Cardoso
Em português with english surtitles

The most beautiful stage play ever written in Portuguese.

The etymology of the Castro surname is related to a castle, a fortified construction. Nuno Cardoso, the new artistic director of Teatro Nacional São João — one of the most compelling theatre projects in post-Carnation Revolution Portugal and collaborative partner of TNL— , invites us to inhabit the confined, claustrophobic territory of a house-country in his staging of Castro (1598), by poet António Ferreira.

Castro, the most terrifying of tragedies and home to some of the most beautiful words ever written in the Portuguese language, confronts us with the concrete intimacy of characters that come across as captives of themselves. The play exposes the issue of utopia and its dark reverse: love/desire and power as addiction and chaos, as a blindness that “tarnishes/The brilliant rays of the ancient glory”.

What is Castro? Certainly the most beautiful stage play ever written in Portuguese—and Ferreira is the key that allows us to understand the phenomenon of Renaissance poetry in Portugal. That is all there is to say …

In addition to the performances, Artistic Director Nuno Cardoso will offer workshops and audience talks in Portuguese and English for anyone interested in his work and an entertaining ride along the history of modern theater.
