To register: https://shorturl.at/87oRe Synopsis The vicious battle for survival fought in the skies above Fortress Malta between June 1940 and the start of 1943 has caught the imagination and interest of many a young boy, historian and author. Beyond the Spitfires, the Commonwealth pilots, and the wailing sirens of the diving Stukas, there was another war, hidden deep beneath the surface, which ensured that the Air Battle of Malta was ultimately a success. The operational structure and development of the air defence system on Malta merits equal recognition as the pilots- without the efficiency of the one, there could be no success of the other. Through this talk based on his dissertation research, Nathaniel Calleja Gera brings to light the oftentimes obscure network of operations rooms, squadrons and airfields which along with the anti-aircraft gunners and other elements formed the shield against enemy aerial bombardment. The Speaker Nathaniel Calleja Gera is a Maltese military historian. Holding a degree in History from the University of Malta, Nathaniel’s primary area of research focuses on the operational capabilities of wartime Malta. This research resulted in his dissertation titled ‘From Scots Street to Lascaris: The Development of the Air Defence Organisation of Malta 1940-1943’. His current research project analyses the experience of Maltese servicemen within the British Army from the Second World War to the island’s independence in 1964. Nathaniel currently forms part of the Collections Management Office at Heritage Malta, the country’s national heritage and museums agency. He previously held the post of Senior Keeper of the Lascaris War Headquarters and the Saluting Battery in Valletta. He has also given various talks related to Malta’s wartime situation both in Malta and abroad, including the island’s role during Operation HUSKY in 1943, and the internment of Jews in wartime Malta.
