Lunds studentteater (LUST) presents A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, on stage only from December 5th to December 7th at AF Borgen! (NOTE: the show is entirely in English -- perfect for English and Swedish speakers alike!)
Read a word about the vision from our Creative Director Isaac:
Who hasn’t heard of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol? It’s been told so many times that Wikipedia has an entire 21,000 word article listing every adaptation it has received. I will admit, there were some groans when LUST elected it as our production. But I had a plan: What if we set the story in modern-day Singapore?
You see, Scrooge is too scared of the world, and clings to money as a shield. During the play, he finally sees that he’s been so focused on survival, he’s missed everything that makes life worth living. I’ve been there, and I see it every summer when I go back to Singapore. The Asian work-life balance is infamous for… well, not existing. Everyone works so hard to survive because our parents grew up in literal mud huts. Scrooge was never comically stingy to me, because in him I saw my friends, my classmates, my parents, and myself.
And so, this play isn’t just A Christmas Carol. It’s a grim reminder both to myself and to you, dear audience, to not lose sight of what you think makes life worth living. Enjoy the show. - Isaac Sim Zhi Yu / Creative Director
