Contact Improvisation Class & Jam with Charlie Morrissey
Saturday 13th December, 12–5pm | £15 | Wainsgate Chapel
An afternoon of dancing and exploration in the unique setting of Wainsgate Chapel. The session begins with a two-hour class led by Charlie Morrissey, offering a warm-up and some shared starting points for moving together. We’ll work with the basic principles of Contact Improvisation—touch, gravity, weight, momentum, and support—developing sensitivity to balance, direction, and physical dialogue with others.
After a short break, the session opens into a jam—an open space for dancing where people of all levels can continue exploring the material from the class and their own movment in relation to the others in the space. It’s a time to follow impulses, test ideas, and find what movement emerges from the meeting of bodies, forces, and attention.
Contact Improvisation is a dance form that investigates the physics of movement between people—rolling, falling, lifting, leaning, and finding equilibrium through shared weight and motion. It invites curiosity, play, and clear physical awareness.
Charlie Morrissey has been engaged in Contact Improvisation for over 35 years, working with many of its key figures including Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Kirstie Simson, Karen Nelson, K.J. Holmes and others.
Always a lively and enjoyable event, the Wainsgate class and jam offer a chance to immerse yourself in a rich physical practice in a beautiful and atmospheric space.
