- **Event Description**: Our open plays at Bike Trail Books are designed for beginners and new players! If you've recently taken a Mahjong 101 class or learned from a friend, this is the open play for you. 

We'll welcome you to the bookstore like we would for a book club: we'll have nametags and friendly faces. And, we'll get you set up at a table to play. All you need to bring with you is a 2026 NMJL card (and, we usually have them in the bookstore if you need to buy one). 

Truly, this is the right place for you to practice, meet new people, and play a little mahjong while having a drink or two. 

(Of course, advanced players are welcome, too; but, all of our tables are friendly-play and may have newbies at the table.)

What is an 'Open Play'?

An open play is not an instructional class; instead, it's a time to actually play the game of mahjong. This is not the right event for you if you've never played or learned (check out our Mahjong 101 classes if you need that!). But, if you've taken a class, learned from a friend, etc., then you should come and play! 

I'm intimidated.

Don't be! But also, we get it. Mahjong is a bit intimidating, and when you're a beginner, it's hard to feel comfortable actually playing. Our tables are designed to be friendly, welcoming, and just right for beginners. You should know the gist of how to play, but seriously, come play & hang with us!

So many of our customers come solo, meet new people, and return again and again -- whether its for mahjong, a workshop, or a book club. We love bringing people together & connecting over analog activities.

2.5 hours of mahjong open play
Snacks
Themed mocktail
All supplies (tiles, mats, racks, etc.) except a 2026 NMJL card
About the theme: 'Back to School'

We're biased, but we LOVE back to school season. (Kathrine Kelly, anyone?! 'Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.')

For this one, our table trinkets are adorable mini-apples, we've got school-supply themed drinks, and we've even found composition notebook-themed table linens. 

We love a theme, and Back to School is kind-of like our super bowl.
