- **Event Name**: Hunchback Auditions
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 14 May, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Thu, 14 May, 2026 at 10:00 pm (-06:00)
- **Event Description**: Come one, come all! Northern Colorado Performing Arts invites performers aged 13+ to join us in sharing the majestic, mystical story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

“Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors) and Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, The Prince of Egypt). Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.

The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.” - MTI

The creative team encourages actors of all races, creeds, ethnicities, and gender expressions to join us in this endeavor. NoCoPA prides itself on being a welcoming place for all, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a piece that prides itself on its diversity.

Please note: although this production will be open to ages 13+, there is content that may be objectionable to some parents (xenophobia/racism, ableism, language, sexuality, and violence). The creative team highly recommends listening through the production’s soundtrack and considering vocal, theatrical, and emotional maturity before auditioning, as the creative team will expect a level of maturity from those cast in this production. Not every person who auditions will be cast due to vocal, space, and time constraints of this production, and the production team thanks you for your understanding.

MAIN ROLES

Quasimodo- 18-25, faithful, naïve, honest. A man who has been raised in solitude due to his facial and limb differences and his mixed heritage. He sees the beauty in the world outside and longs to be a part of it all. The actor will need to be of both great physical and vocal stamina, but also have a well of emotional strength to draw on to not create a caricature of disability. (MT Tenor Vocal Range- B2-B4, physical with strong combat/upper body movement, high intimacy/power dynamic work) *Role will be double cast, each actor will take a weekend and will handle a role in the ensemble as well.

Claude Frollo- 40-55, devout, pious, convicted. Frollo is deeply faithful to the Church and his beliefs in it, and he refuses to be shaken from them. When met with temptation, he fights it as viciously as he can, not caring what he endangers in the meantime. He is filled with grief and a determination to do better by his congregation and his nephew. We will be looking for honesty and vulnerability from Frollo’s actor: in his eyes, he is not a villain, but a man trying to do the best by the grace he has been given. (MT Bass-Baritone Vocal Range- E2-F4, some combat, low movement, high intimacy/power dynamic work)

Esmeralda- 18-30, vivid, curious, courageous. A Roma woman who fatefully visits Paris for the first and last time during this brief week, she is a dancer with a deep sense of justice and demand for the world to be a better place than it was the day before. Esmeralda is an object of desire and a symbol of the cruelties of the world at large. Ideally, the creative team would like to cast a woman of color for this role to line up with the fact that Esmeralda is from a marginalized community, so Women of Color are encouraged to send in their auditions for the role. Note: the role is not closed to those who do not identify as women of color, nor is it pre-cast, nor do we ask you to put your ethnicity on your audition form if you are uncomfortable with that, but we do wish to honor the text and the world of the play. (MT Mezzo-Alto Vocal Range F3-D4, strong solo dancer (there will be a dance callback), strong combat, and high intimacy/power dynamic work) *Role will be double cast, each actor will take a weekend and will handle a role in the ensemble as well.

Phoebus De Martin- 22-35, playful, haunted, loving. A soldier with a traumatic past in the crusades desperate to escape the horrors of war only to be caught in Frollo’s personal war with the Romani people. Phoebus has to be both a lighthearted knight in shining armor type and believably willing to give up his entire career for Esmeralda, so we will be looking for that believable lover energy from our Phoebus auditioners. (MT Baritone with some Tenor softness Vocal Range C2-A3, some dancing, strong combat (including short sword), high intimacy/power dynamic work) *Role will be double cast, each actor will take a weekend and will handle a role in the ensemble as well.

Clopin Trouillefou- 25-45, charming, wise, protective. The King of the Roma in Paris, Clopin is leader among the community, protecting them from the guards and seeking any opportunity to help his people get the upper hand against the cruel government of Paris, even if the method is underhanded. He would do anything to protect them, even taking lives if he had to. While Clopin can come off as a comical character, he’s not a clown. Clopin ideally would also be a Man of Color as King of the Roma, but the role is not closed, nor are actors expected to put their ethnicities on their audition forms. We encourage and humbly ask Actors of Color to lend their talents to this role. His actor needs to be ready to dive into the world of the Roma and do some history research so we remain faithful to the culture of these proud and marginalized people. (MT Tenor Vocal Range D3-B4, strong dancer, moderate combat, some intimacy/power dynamic work)

Jehan Frollo/St. Aphrodisius- 18-30, wild, regretful, loyal. This role will cover both Jehan, Frollo’s younger brother and the driving force behind his piety, and St. Aphrodisius, patron saint of the French diocese and the man who helped Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt with the infant Jesus. Jehan is also Quasimodo’s father and appears as a ghost to admonish Frollo before his death. As Aphrodisius, the actor will need to have earnest and deadpan humor when discussing their martyrdom. Will be in ensemble when not appearing as these characters. (MT Baritone Vocal Range G2-E4, some dancing, mild crowd combat, moderate intimacy/power dynamic work)

Florika- 18-30, flirty, chastising, motherly. A Roma girl who Frollo’s brother, Jehan, falls in love with. She is Quasimodo’s mother and is seen at the top of the show and again at the end as a ghost, and will sing a Latin solo in Finale Ultimo. The actress will be in the ensemble when not playing Florika directly. (MT Soprano, some dancing, mild crowd combat, moderate intimacy/power dynamic work)

Featured Ensemble Roles-
Father Dupin
Lieutenant Frederic Charlus
King Louis XI
An Official
The Madam

ENSEMBLE NOTICE: Due to the nature of this production, the ensemble will construct the narration and the inner workings of Quasimodo’s mind. Because of this, the adage truly applies-- there are no small parts, only small actors. All actors will be citizens of Paris or Romani, and that will be listed on the cast list.
The ensemble will be divided as follows:

GARGOYLES: pragmatic, pessimistic, grouchy. These members will take the lines of dialogue and solos that speak more to Quasimodo’s frustrated and angry self, the gargoyle on the turret, trapped above it all.

SAINTS: calm, thoughtful, deliberate. The rational, adult side of Quasimodo that problem solves and thinks through every situation. They listen and act when needed, thinking deeply before saying things they could regret.

BELLS: bright, sweet, childlike. The bell chorus is specifically made of 5 children ages 13-16 to play the Bells of Notre Dame. They represent the light and hope in Quasimodo’s heart and the kindness that he still harbors toward the people of Paris.
