Edited by Taylor Cole Miller and Alfred L. Martin, Jr., this anthology brings together a diverse range of voices that model different media studies approaches to researching and critically analyzing television texts. The Golden Girls reclaims the production history and development of the show, opens new conversations about audiences–especially Black, queer, and female audiences–and provides new insight into the meteoric rise in popularity of The Golden Girls as a 2020s cultural phenomenon. With twelve original chapters and extensive original interviews offering readers rare insights behind the scenes, the book is a long day’s journey into the marinara of The Golden Girls–an immersive, engaging opportunity for readers to learn more about the show. It truly is the golden age of The Golden Girls.About the Authors/ContributorsAshleé Clark is a storyteller based in Louisville, Ky. She’s the author of the book, Louisville Diners (History Press, 2015), and her writing has appeared in the book The Louisville Anthology (Belt Publishing, 2020), HuffPost, Salon and other publications.Ashleé started her career as a newspaper reporter. She has also worked in corporate communications, tech journalism and public radio. She’s currently the senior manager of community and learning at the American Journalism Project, a nonprofit organization that supports the growth of local news across the country.Ashleé lives in south Louisville with her two dogs, Dolly and Patch. She is also a four-time Golden Girls trivia winner.Jared Clayton Brown refers to himself as a second-wave Golden Girls fan. He first developed his love for the show when he watched syndicated reruns on Lifetime in his residence hall room as an undergrad student at Eastern Michigan University. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in English Language, he took his passion for the series to the next level when he used the show as the basis for his thesis while pursuing a Master of Arts in Popular Culture Studies at Bowling Green State University. He examined the show’s impact on social beliefs regarding older women, its influence on the television sitcom landscape, and its use of contemporary social issues to connect with audience members of all ages. He currently works as a digital news editor for WOSU, the NPR affiliate in Columbus, Ohio. Jared previously spent several years as a Louisville resident and grew to love the city and its amazing people, and he considers the Derby City to be a second home. As a major fan of The Golden Girls, he is always up for connecting with other fans to talk about the iconic series!
