- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 23 Aug, 2026 at 07:00 pm – Sun, 23 Aug, 2026 at 09:30 pm
- **Event Description**: One of the cinema master's most revered films—a meditation on the all consuming power of music, with a a live Hindustani raga performance!About this EventAs part of 7th House's annual SEE•SOUND series celebrating the intersection of music and cinema, join us for an evening celebrating the mesmerizing artistry of Hindustani classical music, centered on THE MUSIC ROOM (JALSAGHAR, 1958), one of master filmmaker Satyajit Ray's towering achievements, accompanied by a live performance of "Miyan Ki Malhar," one of the ragas featured prominently in the film, performed by an ensemble featuring Thomas Klepper (sitar), Saheb Singh (tabla), and Anita Sinclair (tanpura).Widely regarded as one of the great masterpieces of cinema, The Music Room is among the defining works of Satyajit Ray's extraordinary career. Released just a few years after his breakout film Pather Panchali (1955) introduced Ray to international audiences, The Music Room marked another major artistic leap for the legendary Bengali filmmaker. It follows Biswambhar Roy (Chhabi Biswas, one of Bengali cinema's most revered actors), an aging Bengali zamindar whose unwavering devotion to music endures even as his wealth, influence, and way of life steadily disappear. As the world changes around him, he retreats into the grandeur of his once-splendid music room, where lavish concerts become both an affirmation of beauty and a poignant refusal to let go of the past.Adapted from Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay's celebrated short story, The Music Room was Ray's first film to extensively incorporate Indian classical music, weaving it directly into the emotional and dramatic fabric of the story rather than presenting it as an interlude. Featuring a magnificent score by legendary sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan alongside breathtaking performances by some of India's foremost classical musicians of the era, the film transforms music into one of its central characters while exploring the tension between tradition and modernity, memory and impermanence, and the transcendent power of art.Extending the film's musical journey beyond the screen, Thomas Klepper, Saheb Singh, and Anita Sinclair will perform "Miyan Ki Malhar," one of the ragas featured in The Music Room, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience it as a living tradition.Dir.
