Sa(l)vage is the Body — T ough Love, brings together a diverse group of emerging and established artists who boldly claim their personal and political freedom through works centered on the physical and spiritual body. In this time of extreme politics, when attacks on the physical and psychological body
have become more common, the defense of bodily autonomy has taken on an existential urgency.
Throughout history, artists have utilized many strategies to respond to the repression and persecution
of autocratic governments. Some make us stare straight into the cruelty of injustice to strengthen a sense of unity, some express humanity and inner complexity through portraiture, while others depict a deeply powerful inner world. These artists push the envelope of figuration to express a spectrum of experiences. Through the artists’ distinctly personal lenses, the works exemplify a tenacious spirit of pushing back and
standing strong in our current political landscape. Durden and Ray is pleased to present Sa(l)vage is the Body — Tough Love, a crucial glimpse of how life is lived in 2025, which becomes profoundly relevant for us all.
