His scores for films including Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor, and The Sheltering Sky became inseparable from the images they accompanied. Across his work, Sakamoto continually reimagined the possibilities of piano and electronics, creating music capable of extraordinary density and texture while becoming increasingly attuned to the expressive power of silence.Filmed in late 2022, as Sakamoto faced the end of his life, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO | OPUS presents the composer alone at the piano for a performance conceived in the knowledge that it would be his last. With characteristic care, Sakamoto chose and sequenced twenty pieces spanning the breadth of his career, ranging from his years with Yellow Magic Orchestra through his landmark film scores to the quiet, meditative works of his final years, and reimagined them for solo piano.
