- **Event Description**: The beautiful restoration of the earliest surviving feature directed by an Iranian woman, produced in secrecy and long unseenAbout this Event7th House is very proud to present the restoration of a landmark of Iranian New Cinema and a work of enduring formal and historical significance: Marva Nabili’s THE SEALED SOIL (Khake Sar Beh Mohr, 1977), the earliest surviving feature directed by an Iranian woman. Produced independently and without official sanction under conditions of considerable secrecy on the eve of political upheaval in Iran, the film was completed shortly before Nabili’s departure into exile and has never been publicly screened in its country of origin. For this very special presentation we are honored to welcome mythologist Maryam Sayyad—founder and curator of the Mythos of Iran symposium—who will offer an introductory reflection on the film’s history and enduring significance.Set in a rural village suspended between tradition and modernization, the film follows an eighteen-year-old woman (Flora Shabavis) whose refusal of an arranged marriage is swiftly interpreted by her family as possession, prompting the summoning of an exorcist to correct what is perceived as a spiritual disturbance. Nabili has described her protagonist as “somewhere in between two worlds”—a formulation that extends to a village, and a nation, in transition. The film unfolds with deliberate ambiguity, tracing a consciousness caught between states rather than resolving into confrontation or escape.Working with a small crew and largely nonprofessional performers, Nabili employs a rigorously restrained visual language: static compositions, extended duration, and minimal dialogue. Influenced in part by Persian miniature painting, the film favors observation over dramatization, culminating in an open ending that resists closure. Upon its sparse original screenings in Europe and North America, critics drew comparisons to Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles and Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Gertrud, noting its austere control and focus on interior resistance.Widely regarded as the first overtly feminist feature in Iranian cinema, The Sealed Soil has remained largely unseen for decades—its absence from Iranian screens underscoring the very social and institutional forces it so quietly renders visible. Severe yet deeply felt, the film endures as a singular achievement whose critique of gendered constraint continues to resonate across time and place.Dir.
