The word posada means inn or lodging, and traditionally the celebration reenacts the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of shelter.Although many of the traditions that we know & love, like posadas, have a dark colonial origin, for many of us in the diaspora in the U.S. & in parts of México & Latin America, the meaning has evolved, its meaning has softened and expanded beyond its religious and colonial origins.When I moved to México, posadas showed up in a different way. They became holiday gatherings with friends, food, dancing, piñatas, and a feeling of warmth and belonging. Less about ritual, more about togetherness. Less about religion, more about community.This version of the posada is an offering rooted in that same spirit, a gathering for friends and chosen family in Los Angeles.
