Ritual bells. A cawing crow. A mother singing in the darkness. These figures haunt The Bruise—the new album of heavy folk songs from musician and writer Claire Cronin. Her third release on Orindal Records after Big Dread Moon (2019) and Bloodless (2021), and crafted in the same spirit as her cult-favorite book, Blue Light of the Screen: On Horror, Ghosts, and God (2020), The Bruise is an immersive sequel in Cronin’s brand of folk horror.NighttimeA gift for lovers of 60s folk and crystalline, song-y psychedelia, Nighttime aka Eva Louise Goodman, delivers fluent, buoyant compositions that run the gamut of psych-pop, girl group, and Americana. Nighttime's third full length album, Keeper Is The Heart, engineered and co-produced by Florist's Rick Spataro, was released on Ba Da Bing! Records in 2023. Lauded by Bandcamp as Best New Music, they called the record “a mystical tapestry of psychedelic folk.” Nighttime reaches deep into the essence of musicians such as Vashti Bunyan, Sibylle Baier and Pentangle, breaking down the decades into a sound thoroughly and bizarrely modern.Emma AyzenbergEmma Ayzenberg writes songs that feel like short stories. Never one to stray away from digging, allocating space for shadows to shift with the natural light; shadows calloused, intimidating, and all oddly beneficial with her songwriting’s blend of personal amnesty and forgiveness. Based in Los Angeles, Ayzenberg makes music laden with intimate vocals, patient melodies, and richly-textured cinematic arrangements underpinned by poetic lyricism. The indie folk artist’s emotionally-charged, genre-blurring discography—spanning two critically acclaimed EPs (Animus, 2022; Iron Mountain, 2024)—has earned praise from Under the Radar, FLOOD, Brooklyn Vegan, Bandcamp, Paste, and Atwood, with comparisons to artists like The Weather Station, Hand Habits, and Flock of Dimes, and Weyes Blood.Ayzenberg’s forthcoming debut LP, Child of Saturn, produced by Carly Bond (Meernaa) and Robert Shelton (Luke Temple, Lucius, Shannon Lay), marks a bold evolution in her sound and songwriting. Written during Emma’s Saturn return and recorded in tandem with its unfolding, the album wrestles with love, identity, and grief, charting the ache of becoming with unflinching honesty. About Our Library Concert Series“The universality of music, and its importance in the life of [humanity] is in my ways analogous to water. It may exist in countless forms and several states. It nourishes and sustains many kinds of internal life…Like beauty, it is forever ministering, enriching and expanding the potentials of human consciousness.” - Manly P. HallThe concerts on the campus of the Philosophical Research Society aim to bring listener and creator together for one transcendent experience. In his essay “Philosophy of Music”, Manly Hall wrote: “The primary purpose of art is to interpret. It seeks to convey an impression by which we share with the artist some conviction or ideal as a result of an emotional impact.” The intimate performancesprogrammed at PRS allow for an impactful and connective experience for all. We strive to provide a space for artists inspired by the beauty around them and within, and take listeners to undiscovered terrain.Ticket price: $20 (in-person event only)Please email events@prs.org or phone 323-663-2167 with any questions. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events2/banners/c94548b0-a12c-11f1-a977-99d1d33e99bd-rimg-w957-h740-dc181808-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events8/banners/c987cff0-a12c-11f1-a977-99d1d33e99bd-rimg-w1200-h680-dc080808-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/c9bdd410-a12c-11f1-a977-99d1d33e99bd-rimg-w741-h740-dce8e8e8-gmir.jpg CONTENT DISCLAIMERThe views, opinions, and thoughts expressed by the presenters are solely those of the presenter and may not represent those of the Philosophical Research Society (PRS), its affiliates, or any individuals associated with PRS.
