The evidence-based practice of Motivational Interviewing (MI) is uniquely suited to help clients overcome the ambivalence that keeps them from making positive changes in their lives. It is a strengths-based approach that is collaborative, goal oriented, and focused on exploring the client’s own motivation to make change and grow. Through this introductory training, participants will explore a method of communication that is uniquely suited to help clients identify and work through their barriers, be clear about their hopes and dreams, and be able to visualize what self sufficiency could mean for them and their families. Participants will learn about the evidence base, theoretical background, SPIRIT (attitude), tasks, and skills of MI. They will have opportunities to practice their skills in small groups and will be exposed to a multi-modal approach to learning.
