- **Event Description**: You may have heard of Laika the space dog before, but she was not the only dog the Soviet Union launched into space. From 1951-1966, the Soviet Union attempted 42 suborbital and orbital launches involving 47 dogs that were in 81 passenger slots. From 1966-2001, China did 3 suborbital and orbital launches involving 3 dogs that were in 3 passenger slots. This talk gives highlights about some of these rocket flights and the dog astronauts. 

This program is a technical talk and is appropriate for older kids and adults. Please remember that not all the dogs survived the trip to space, and use personal judgement before attending. 

About the Presenter:
Steve Becker received a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Illinois, Urbana (1979). After visiting Los Alamos for several years as a visiting scientist, he joined the Lab in 1983. Steve’s hobbies include piloting small planes, flying aerobatic planes in Santa Fe, history, photography, and travel. In 1995, he made it to the interview stage of the astronaut selection process.

Nature Center doors open at 6:45pm.
Planetarium events in general are not recommended for children under 5.
