FREDERICK DOUGLASS IN IRELAND
Join us for a reading, performance and discussion on Frederick Douglass’s time in Ireland, featuring historian and author, Christine Kinealy and poet and Douglass impersonator, Nathan Richardson.
Focusing on the time he spent in Ireland from 1845 to 1846, Christine Kinealy’s recent work explores Frederick Douglass’s life-long relationship with the country. The abolitionist leader and activist for international human rights, Douglass never forgot his time in Ireland and playfully referred to himself as the “black Daniel O’Connell,” the Irish political leader who was fighting for the Irish emancipation from Britain during this time.
Douglass was noted to say of this visit that “For the first time in his life he felt truly free,” “Abolition was very strong there because Ireland had been a colony, and Catholics had suffered not having basic civil rights, so there was an empathy he felt between the oppressed poor Irish people and poor oppressed slave,” Kinealy said. Douglass made sure to make the distinction that the Irish were oppressed and poor, but they were not slaves.
