I've spent a lot of time since the election results were announced speaking with friends who fear for their own safety. One of the major messages of the Republican candidate's campaign was of xenophobia, bigotry directed toward Muslim's and the oppression/objectification of women. This election brought with it the normalization of hate.
I am asking ALL women, irrespective of religion, race, or ideological beliefs, to join me in solidarity with our Muslim sisters by wearing a hijab on January 20th, 2017, Inauguration Day! I was born in Northern California, to a head strong, atheist, passionate woman, who taught me to stand up for women's rights and to speak my mind.
I have spoken to a few Muslim friends before making this proposal as I want to be sure that our intent is clear. For Muslim Women the hijab is an expression of their identity and a commitment to their faith. It is also a very public expression of their religion which puts them as risk of condemnation or Att*ck by Islamophobes. We mean only respect for our Muslim sisters and we wish to send a message that we are uniting with them against anti-Islamic rhetoric. We stand with you as one sisterhood of women-kind and want to show you our solidarity and support.
Please feel free to share with friends and spread a message of love and unification. The more women who participate the more visible our message will become.
