A curated collection of the most acclaimed documentary films of the year. We bring both films and the creators to nonfiction lovers.

About this Event

7:30pm PT SHOW TIME:

All screenings take place at The Landmark West Los Angeles and begins at 7:30pm PT. Check-in starts at 6:30pm. Following the film, stay for a moderated conversation with the filmmakers.

Free public seating is first-come, first served after IDA members have been admitted. Admission is not guaranteed.

COVID POLICY:

In order to provide a safe environment for all, we now require that all IDA staff, volunteers and attendees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Everyone on site must wear a mask at all times (while not eating or drinking), whether the events are indoors or outdoors.

Please note that these events are subject to cancellation due to the ongoing pandemic.

ACCESSIBILITY:

Please email us at least 24 hours before the screening to request accessible seating. Elevator access, handicapped parking and restrooms are available onsite. All theaters have ramp access.

Closed Captioning devices will be provided for any films that have provided a CC’d film. ASL Interpreters for post-screening Q&A can be provided upon request. Please email at least 72 hours before the screening with your ASL request.

Tuesday, September 21: Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain

A gripping portrait of the inimitable Anthony Bourdain, Oscar®-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville’s new documentary Roadrunner traces the unlikely life and career of the chef turned bestselling author and global television star through the eyes of the people who knew him best.

This in-theater screening includes a moderated post-film conversation with director and producer Morgan Neville moderated by Dana Harris-Bridson, Editor in Chief of IndieWire.

Tuesday, September 28: Rebel Hearts

In 1960s Los Angeles, The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary fought for equality, their livelihoods, and freedom against an all-powerful Cardinal who sought to keep them in their place. Their bold acts of faith, defiance and activism turned the church upside down, helping to reshape our society in ways that continue to resonate today. Pedro Kos’s Rebel Hearts combines two decades of never-before-seen incredible archival footage and stunning animation to beautifully illustrate the story of these incredible women.

This in-theater screening includes a moderated post-film conversation. Panelists include director Pedro Kos and film subjects Lenore Navarro Dowling and Rosa Manriquez, moderated by Jenelle Riley, Editor of Variety.

Thursday, September 30: Found

In Amanda Lipitz's documentary film, Found, three adopted American teenage girls discover that they are blood-related cousins. Their online meeting inspires the young women to confront complicated and emotional questions, and embark on a once in a lifetime journey to China together in search of answers, connections, and their lost history.

Tuesday, October 5: Flee

Flee tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan.

TIME Studios is an Emmy Award®-winning television, film and immersive studio focusing on the development, production and distribution of truth-based premium unscripted and scripted premium storytelling that moves the world. This IDA Screening Series shorts program includes four films from the studio:

Tuesday, October 12: Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street reintroduces audiences to the visionary “gang” of mission-driven artists, writers, and educators who in the 1960s audaciously interpreted radical changes in society to create one of most influential and impactful television programs in history, Sesame Street. With behind-the-scenes footage and over 20 original interviews, Street Gang tells the origin story of Sesame Street through the people who made it, and shows how they entertained and educated children in ways never done before.
