WHAT IS A BABY DEDICATION?

A baby dedication is simply a ceremony involving parents and loved ones surrounding the child, as the Pastor prays over the child and the parents.  In Old Testament times this is how children received a blessing from the Lord.  This is not the way to secure salvation, (as salvation is by grace and the result of a person making the decision to give his or her life to Jesus), but rather a time to ask God to watch over this child's soul and future, a time for parents to commit themselves to be examples of Christ for their child and to raising their son or daughter in the loving admonition of God and His Word from this special day forward. Furthermore, it is also a time for the parents to ask for grace and wisdom in carrying out their responsibilities.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 says:
  5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 “And these words which I command you today shall
be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."

The most powerful way of teaching our children is through how we live our lives. Therefore, it is of great importance for us to consider, that if we as parents truly wish for our child to one day love and follow God, our lives must be an example of that.

As the church is the body of Christ (Romans 12:5), this is also a moment for the church to commit to help the parents in the raising of their child, also becoming examples of Jesus to the child.
