Felkley was selected as the 2025/6 Winter Artist in Residence for the Firehouse Artist Occupied Series. This program invites emerging and established artists working in all media to explore their practice while engaging with the community. The artist utilizes the Firehouse South Gallery as a working studio for three months before a culminating solo exhibition in the Main Gallery. The title of this exhibit, “Seconds,” is a reference to many things. Second careers, second chances for found objects, second opportunities to teach, as well as the passage of time — second by second. Using bent wood lamination techniques, Felkley creates sculptures using multiple layers of thin material glued together. These layers are bent into the desired shape. Felkley then uses pressure, created by vacuum or through tape binding, to finish the shape. The more layers in each lamination, the stronger the piece will be. Doug Felkley is a teacher, a sculptor, and a sometimes reluctant furniture maker. After retiring from a decades long career as a gymnastics coach, Felkley felt it was time to explore an entirely new second career. This desire for something new led Felkley to study fine furniture making and design at Red Rocks Community College. Upon completion of the program he began taking commissions for custom furniture pieces, something that he found extremely stressful. Looking for a new creative outlet, Felkley began experimenting with wood focused sculpture and found expression for his creative ideas. Although he felt deeply connected to his new creative path, Felkley missed working with students, and out of nowhere an opportunity to be a middle school woodworking teacher showed up! Now, teaching woodworking as an art form gives Felkley an outlet for both of his passions, teaching and art. Seconds II- South Gallery Works by Jean Hultkrans and kelly j drumright Curated by Doug Felkley “Seconds II”, curated by Winter Artist in Residence, Doug Felkley is an exhibit that explores transformation. Rather than separating practices by medium or theme, the gallery is arranged to allow kelly drumright's sculptural assemblages and Jean Hultkrans’ collages and ikebana to face and echo one another across the room. The installation emphasizes cycles—of use and reuse, of knowing and not knowing, of injury and repair—creating visual and emotional connections between two distinct practices. By placing altered medical materials beside layered images and organic forms, the gallery becomes a space where vulnerability, resilience, and renewal coexist.
