We found ourselves at the “crossroads” - the real crossroads, according to local legend, just down the road from where Charley Patton lived, worked and played at Dockery Farms, & where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. All confessed that we did feel something eerily special, as we stood at the often-cited birthplace of the blues. Years ago, then-Mayor of Asbury Park Ed Johnson told several of us: “if we get really quiet and stand really still, we might detect a faint beat underground” ... alluding to all of the amazing music that’s emerged from the city and nearby areas. JSJBF continues to honor the legacy of and the music that sprang from - and connects - these two places, the Mississippi Delta and the Jersey Shore. www.jsjbf.org Eileen Chapman, Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music “Delta Blues plays a significant role in the landscape of American Music. Dating back over 100 years, this music art form has been a major influence for both blues and rock performers throughout the world. Contemporary artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Cat Power, the Rolling Stones and others were inspired by the works of Delta Blues icons such as Son House, Robert Johnson and BB King. Our collaboration with JSJBF demonstrates our role in promoting all forms of American music and its impact on our culture. Visit Clarksdale C’mon down to The Crossroads in Clarksdale, MS, just south of Memphis. Drive to nearby Stovall Plantation where famed musicologist Alan Lomax first recorded Muddy Waters. Visit the building where Ike Turner recorded “Rocket 88,” which many consider to be the first rock ‘n’ roll song. So many things to explore, from the world-famous Delta Blues Museum to canoeing on the Mighty Mississippi. There’s no one else of Anthony’s generation who has learned first-hand from and/or played with the last of the older generation who are gone now ... Anthony was there and absorbed the distinct sounds, vocals, playing and showmanship from each musician he encountered.
