Mesh Radio Node, expanding West Coast Mesh at LOT Lab
Library of Technics invites artists, scientists, and protectors of craft to the Broadcasting Program, where the signal moves freely between source and receiver, continuing the chain of knowledge.
LOT Lab consists of practices in repetition, critical thinking, and manual efficiency that support the formation and repair of neural pathways.
In this session, participants will build their own LoRa mesh radio node — a small, low-power device capable of sending encrypted messages peer-to-peer across a decentralized network. No WiFi. No cell towers. No gov infrastructure but the one we build together.
LoRa is a long-range radio protocol accessible in most regions without licenses or certifications. These radios are designed to rebroadcast every message they receive, forming a self-healing mesh, meaning every member of the network, including those at the furthest distance, stays connected. The current range record stands at 331km. No phone required. No dedicated router. No central point of failure.
This workshop is part of an ongoing effort to expand West Coast Mesh, a 100% community-driven, open-source communications network growing up and down the Pacific Coast. Every node someone builds and takes home extends the network's reach and resilience. You leave with a working device and a place on the map.
Under the instruction of Sam Mars — Mexican engineer at Virgin Galactic
Participants will: — Assemble their node — Fit case — Flash the MeshCore — Connect to the West Coast Mesh network — Send their first off-grid, encrypted message
Good to know: A laptop is recommended but not required. All parts, cases, and tools are provided. Radios can also be paired with a phone to send messages directly to your specific node, useful for staying connected with friends and family off-grid or in times of dispair.
This is a 2-hour introductory class. No prior experience is necessary. Introductory materials are included. Specialty materials and expanded selections will be available for purchase during class at Library of Technics Bookstore.
