- **Event Description**: Alan Powers explores ‘Bawden’s Beastly Books': Morality Tales about Animals and Insects and other contributions to children’s illustration.About this Event2026 saw the publication of a facsimile of the unique manuscript copy of Snails for All from Daddie’s Invaluable Collection, written and illustrated by Edward Bawden, the grandest in a series of unique booklets that he made to send to his two children, mostly later redrawn and republished by Routledge as Hold Fast by Your Teeth (1963). The original manuscript was generously presented to The Higgins, Bedford, to join their substantial Bawden archive. Alan Powers, who wrote a short text for the new edition, will discuss these books in the context of Bawden’s sardonic sense of humour and his Victorian sources of inspiration, including Edward Lear, Richard Doyle and Charles H. Bennett.The meeting room opens at 18:30. The talk starts at 19:00.Wine and canapés will be served before the talk.The meeting takes place in the Master's Room (ground floor)This event is organised by IBIS, the Imaginative Book Illustration Society.This is a "ticket only" event to which all Members and Guest are invited.
