Sun 23 Aug, North London (N11).About this EventYou could list what's wrong with them right now, without stopping to think.When did you last put a hand on them for any reason other than checking for a lump?On Sunday 23rd August, a few of us are going to lie down in a warm front room in North London, rest a hand there, and find out what is actually in there. And then we are going to paint it.Why we lose touch with themThey stopped being ours at about eleven. A boy at school said something, or an aunt did, or a magazine with a number in it, and from that day you understood this part of you was public: what gets looked at, what somebody else wants, and later, for some of us, what fed a child. Ask a woman about her breasts now and you rarely get a description. You get a verdict. Too small. One bigger than the other. Not what they were before, whenever before was. Sagging, and hating that word while using it. For some of us it goes further than that: surgery that was not a choice, scars, a reconstruction, and a whole set of feelings that rarely get said out loud.Meanwhile the only touch on offer has been somebody else's, or the search for a lump. Not curiosity. Not kindness. Not pleasure. So plenty of women, resting a hand there in earnest for the first time, find very little. A flatness. A distance. Sometimes nothing at all. That is not a fault, and it is not the whole story.What the morning actually isFirst we feel them from the inside. Lying down, blankets, hands resting on your own breasts, fully clothed. No pressure, no massage, nothing to do. Melanie leads a guided meditation in Clean Language, which means she asks and then goes quiet. What feelings are there. What kind of feelings. Whereabouts. A warmth, a coolness, a tightness. A size, a shape. Is the left different from the right. She will not tell you what you are going to find. You lie there in the quiet and you find out."I did the breast holding. It was incredible. My left breast was connected to others and outward looking. My right towards me and for my care."JThen we paint what we found. Body paints, mirrors, forty-five unhurried minutes, and our own hands rather than brushes. Not a picture of a breast: the thing you felt in there, put on the outside of the body it came from.Then we come back into circle, and each of us says what she found and what she made, and the rest of us appreciate it out loud. You can pass, or simply watch, and you never have to explain why. Most women arrive thinking the painting will be the hard part. It is almost never the painting. It is letting the other women look at what you made and say something kind, and not batting it away.If what you find in there is nothing, bring that. Nothing has a shape and a colour like anything else does. And if something does stir, that is worth knowing too. This is richly nerved tissue and a real source of pleasure in its own right, not a warm-up for something else, and many women describe feeling unexpectedly close to their own heart, which sits just behind."The idea of listening to my breasts was new to me, and I loved it when I got clear messages. I find it very soothing and calming to hold both breasts. Mainly, an incredible connection to and with myself."MaryWhat you chooseThis is a breast painting circle, and it is worth knowing exactly what that means before you book.Some women will be bare. Some paint over a t-shirt or a vest top. Some paint their chest and collarbones and leave it there. And if you would rather not paint on your body at all, there is paper, and you can work on that instead. All of it is a complete way to do the morning, and you can change your mind halfway through. You paint your own body. There is no touch between us and nothing is photographed.If you have scars, or you have had surgery, a reconstruction, implants or a mastectomy, you are welcome here and your chest is not a problem in this room.The circle is small, usually just a handful of women, in a warm private home. Women come in their twenties and in their seventies, and whatever age you arrive at you will not be the odd one out. The room is warm, the curtains are closed, and the paint washes off in the shower.A note on sensitivityPutting a hand on a part of your body you may have been at war with for years can bring feeling up. That is welcome here and it is held gently.Tell me when you book about any skin allergies or sensitivities. The paints are cosmetic grade and there is a plain hypoallergenic option. We avoid broken skin, recent surgical sites and any area currently having radiotherapy. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, message me first.This morning is not a health check and nothing in it replaces breast screening. If you notice anything that concerns you, please see your GP.Practical detailsWhen: Sunday 23rd August, 11:00am to 1:30pm. Doors open 10:45.Where: A warm, private home in North London (N11). The exact address is sent to you on booking. Please note it is a first-floor flat, one flight of stairs up. There is no step-free access to this circle.Bring: A white or light-coloured t-shirt you are happy to paint on and keep, like the one in the photo. There is a lot of paint involved, not a little, so it wants to be something you do not mind covering. If you do not have one, bring anything you would be happy to paint on. Everything else is provided, along with herbal tea.Investment: Concession £20 | Standard £30 | Supporter £40. This circle uses community pricing, so please choose the tier that reflects your situation. Standard covers the cost of running the morning, including the body paints.
