He has been the International Writer-in-Residence at Cove Park, Scotland, and a Writer-in-Residence at Georgetown University’s Lannan Center for Poetics & Social Practice in Washington, DC. In 2019, he received a grant from the Washington, DC, Commission on Arts & Humanities. A former juror for both the Miles Morland Scholarship and the AKO Caine Prize for African Writing, he is the 2010 winner of the Caine Prize for his story ‘Stickfighting Days’. He lives in Germany and Côte d’Ivoire.Fiammetta Rocco grew up in Kenya and read Arabic at Oxford. For 25 years she was the culture editor of The Economist, and is now a writer and critic based in London. In 2010 she was the chair of the judges of the Caine Prize for African Writing, the year that Olufemi Terry won, and has been a trustee for many years. She is now the Emeritus Director of the International Booker Prize, having ran it for two decades, and is an energetic advocate of reading and storytelling. Fiammetta has been the judge of numerous prizes for fiction and non-fiction, and will be the chair of the 2026 Orwell Prize for Political Fiction. Her writing has won awards on both sides of the Atlantic. She is an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Her book, The Miraculous Fever Tree, about malaria and the discovery of quinine, was published in Britain and in America.
