- **Event Description**: Have you ever found yourself replaying the same conversation over and over in your mind?About this EventPerhaps you've spent hours analysing a decision, worrying about something that hasn't happened yet, or lying awake at night unable to stop your thoughts from circling. Most of us have experienced overthinking at some point. We often assume the problem lies in the thoughts themselves. If only we could solve the problem, find the answer, or stop thinking about it altogether. But what if the issue isn't what you're thinking about? What if the real question is how your mind processes thoughts in the first place? In this Mind Circles Talk, psychiatrist and researcher Dr Priya Raj joins us to explore the hidden patterns behind overthinking and why some thoughts become difficult to let go of.About Mind Circles TalksThis event is part of the Mind Circles Talks 'Sip n Learn' series, where clinicians, researchers, academics, authors, and thought leaders share evidence-based ideas in relaxed social spaces. Our aim is simple: to make neuroscience accessible without oversimplifying the science. No prior knowledge is required. Just curiosity. Why Do Some Thoughts Become "Sticky"?Many people assume overthinking is simply a personality trait. Some describe themselves as worriers. Others believe they are naturally anxious, analytical, or prone to dwelling on things.Yet research suggests there may be more going on beneath the surface. One particular thinking style, known as rumination, has become a major focus within mental health research. Rumination involves repetitive patterns of thinking that often feel difficult to switch off. Rather than helping us solve problems, these cycles can keep us stuck, replaying concerns, mistakes, worries, or unanswered questions. But why does this happen? Why do some thoughts fade into the background while others seem to demand our attention again and again?Drawing on current research in cognitive neuroscience and psychiatry, Priya will explore how different thinking styles shape our mental wellbeing and why the way we think may sometimes matter more than the thoughts themselves.Together, we'll examine what scientists have learned about repetitive negative thinking, how these patterns develop, and why they are linked to anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties. We'll also explore the relationship between attention, cognition, emotion, and mental habits, helping to shed light on why the mind can sometimes become trapped in loops that feel impossible to escape.Along the way, we'll consider some of the everyday experiences many people recognise:Replaying awkward conversations long after they've happenedConstantly analysing decisionsWorrying about future outcomesBecoming stuck in cycles of self-criticismStruggling to mentally switch off, even when exhaustedThis is not a session about "positive thinking" or quick fixes. Instead, it offers a research-informed look at how the mind works and what psychology and neuroscience can teach us about our relationship with our thoughts.About the SpeakerPriya is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Clinical Research Fellow based at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and the UCL Division of Psychiatry. Her research focuses on different styles of thinking and how they influence mental health in children and young people. Her PhD focussed on the neurocognitive basis of rumination - a form of repetitive negative thinking that plays an important role in anxiety, depression, and emotional wellbeing.Alongside this work, Priya has research interests in neurodevelopmental conditions including ADHD and autism, as well as the influence of parenting, maternal mental health, and cognitive development on long-term psychological outcomes.Clinically, she specialises in the assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and autism. She also works with young people experiencing anxiety and depression.Alongside her clinical and academic work, Priya enjoys communicating science to wider audiences. Her writing has appeared in publications including The Huffington Post, The Mental Movement Magazine, and The Wellness Motion. She also writes Think Soup, a Substack publication exploring how cognition and mental health are experienced in both children and parents: https://drpriyapsych.substack.comEvent ScheduleDoors close at 19:1519:00 – 19:30 | Arrival & Warm-Up Activity Guest arrival and informal connection.
