- **Event Description**: Screening two films by Marlon Rouse Tavares and Maya BurnandAbout this EventIn 2010, Marlon Rouse Tavares was a student who travelled to China and made a short film about a group of Uyghur musicians. What he didn’t know then was that he was capturing culture of a people under oppression which would be recognised as a genocide by British MPs in 2021. Fifteen years later, student Maya Burnand interviewed Uyghur activists, researchers and artists to make a short film about the UK’s connection to the oppression of Uyghurs through products made with forced labour in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, also known as East Turkestan.Marlon and Maya learnt of each other’s work through their mothers who play tennis together at Elmwood tennis club, Kensal Rise.Before reports of mass internment and forced labour came out of Xinjiang, Uyghurs were already facing discrimination in China. Now, with censorship, crimes against humanity and genocide in the homeland, and transnational repression outside of China, it is more important than ever to understand what role we all play in the continued oppression against Uyghurs.Culture is not static, and Uyghur culture grows in diasporas outside the homeland. This screening does not attempt to define a people by it’s oppression, but recognise the strength and resistance of those who are keeping their heritage alive by developing it in new lands. We will learn about the past through Marlon’s film, the present through Maya’s film and discuss the future in a panel discussion.
