UCL World AIDS Day 2025: Reflections on the Early Days of the HIV Epidemic

Join us this World AIDS Day for a lunchtime event exploring the early years of the AIDS epidemic.

We’ll begin with a screening of “30 Years of Living with HIV”, an oral history project by Positive East and Eastside Community Heritage. The short film shares powerful personal stories from those who lived through the HIV prevention campaigns of the 1980s.

Following the screening, Dr Rex Melville will speak about his experiences in HIV care during the early days of the epidemic.

Dr Rex Melville FRCP MBBS is an Australian-born consultant, recently retired, specialising in HIV and Sexual Health. His main full-time posts have been at Barts Hospital Trust, principally at Whipps Cross Hospital.

He developed a particular interest in PLWHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS) support through facilitating a patient-led forum (based at Whipps Cross), in training clinicians and students in small groups, and in genital dermatology.
