- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 27 Jan, 2026 at 06:30 pm – Tue, 27 Jan, 2026 at 08:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Talk by photographer Katie Lock drawing parallels between her cancer treatment at Barts and conservation works to Barts North Wing.About this EventJoin photographer and academic Katie Lock for the launch of The Waiting Room, a deeply personal photographic project developed during and after her cancer treatment at Barts Hospital. Drawing on her experience as a patient, Lock turned to photography to process the altered sense of time and embodiment that accompanied illness. The project explores the physical and emotional impact of treatment through detailed images taken in and around the historic North Wing of Barts. By capturing scars, textures, architectural fragments, and moments of stillness, The Waiting Room invites reflection onvulnerability, care, and the passage of time. Lock’s photographs sit in quiet dialogue with the hospital’s own layered history, particularly the ongoing ‘restoration’ of the building through the ages. The event will include a talk, a reading from the book, and a presentation of selected photographs. About the artistKatie Lock is a London-based photographer working as part of Brotherton-Lock Photography alongside her partner Tim Brotherton. Her work has been widely published in magazines and books. She holds a PhD and lectures in photography at Middlesex University.Find out more:www.brothertonlock.com

"description": "Barts Heritage is a charity formed in partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust to repair and renovate the Grade I listed North Wing and Henry VIII Gatehouse at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City of London. The North Wing houses two of England’s most important interiors, the Great Hall, and the Hogarth Stair with its massive paintings by William Hogarth, together with the historic Hospital archives and an extensive collection of art. These interiors and collections represent the historic heart of the Hospital and reflect 900 years of history.Working closely with Barts Health NHS Trust (and its supporter body Barts Charity) we have planned a comprehensive restoration project which will open up the buildings for a range of uses as part of the 900th anniversary celebrations in 2023. Our shared vision is to bring the buildings back to life as a place of discovery and delight for visitors and to provide facilities to promote the the health and wellbeing of hospital staff. In the meantime we will continue to promote the North Wing and its spectacular interiors as a place for performance, conferences and celebrations. We also want to increase accessibility so that our treasures can be enjoyed by a wider audience, helping to fund renovations and sustain the future of the buildings."
