Talk Statement
Many of the most successful applications of digital making technologies are almost invisible, and by definition, the hardest to recognise.
A simple litmus test for great design is this: when a designer presents their finished piece to someone skilled in the traditional craft process and simply hands it over without explanation, the ideal response should be, “My goodness, that’s fantastic! How did you do that?”
Such a reaction shows that the new technology has enhanced, rather than overshadowed, the inherent quality and value of the craft.
Conversely, any conversation that begins with, “Look at my amazing 3D-printed ________” usually exposes deeper shortcomings. The technology used to create an object should never define it; it should only enter the conversation once the object’s merit is clear.
This talk will explore and unpack a series of exceptional creative projects that transcend the novelty of the tools used to make them, demonstrating how digital processes can serve, not dominate, thoughtful design and craftsmanship.

I am a qualified Architect who ran the industrial 3D printing service bureau Digits2Widgets (D2W) in London for 8 years where I collaborated with many members of London’s professional design community.
Since, I have been involved in consulting and education especially around Design for Additive Manufacturing (AM) with a specific focus on Selective Laser Sintering.
I am currently an Associate Lecturer on the MA Design for Industry 5.0 course at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Remaining in the world of 3D printing, I am on the steering committee of the Design for AM Network, a member of the TCT Editorial Advisory Group, the TCT User Group steering committee and a TCT Awards judging panel member since 2022.
I developed the Additive Companion web resource which aims to clarify the overwhelming spectrum of Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing technologies, helping anyone who makes anything at any level, to adopt them from their appropriate starting point.
