- **Event Description**: Book Launch, Illustrated Historical Talk and Q&AAbout this EventTHE REAL CAPTAIN HOOK? From Eton to Brazil: The Hidden Life of a Nineteenth-Century PirateBook Launch, Illustrated Historical Talk and Q&AHosted by King's College London and the Anglo-Brazilian SocietyThe Anglo-Brazilian Society is delighted to welcome Brazilian writer and historian Marcos Juliano Ofenbock for an evening devoted to one of the most remarkable episodes British - Brazilian history: the hunt for the largest documented pirate treasure in the world: Francis Hodder. For more than twenty-two years, Brazilian author and historical researcher Marcos Juliano Ofenbock has investigated the extraordinary story of Francis Hodder, an Anglo-Irish former Eton pupil who, according to nineteenth-century accounts, became the pirate captain known as Zulmiro before disappearing under a false identity in southern Brazil.Under the name João Francisco Inglez, he lived for more than fifty years in Curitiba. Church registers, census records, municipal papers, cemetery records, nineteenth-century newspapers and surviving family objects have allowed researchers to reconstruct the hidden life of a man long regarded as little more than legend.Zulmiro was connected to the treasure of Trinidad Island, a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic. Said to contain gold, jewels and religious objects removed from Spanish America during the wars of independence, the treasure inspired British, Brazilian and American expeditions, including the voyage recorded in The Cruise of the Alerte. The story of an ‘Eton pirate’ reached the British press in 1896, before J. M. Barrie established Captain Hook as one of literature’s most enduring villains. Barrie’s Hook was an educated, aristocratic pirate associated with Eton, famously crying Floreat Etona. In 1927, Barrie returned to the subject in Captain Hook at Eton, a speech containing intriguing references to Brazil.Presented as a documented historical hypothesis - not a definitive literary identification - this illustrated talk follows archival records, newspapers, maps, British expeditions and surviving objects to explore whether the true story of Francis Hodder may have contributed to the cultural world from which Captain Hook emerged.Attendees will discover how a life long dismissed as legend was reconstructed from archival fragments spanning Britain and Brazil, and can put their own questions to the researcher in the Q&A.About the speakerMarcos Juliano Ofenbock is a Brazilian writer, economist, entrepreneur and historical researcher, and a Director of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Paraná (IHGPR), founded in 1900. His twenty-two-year investigation has developed into an international project combining archival research, cultural exchange and an authorised archaeological expedition.
