Followed by Q&A.About this EventJoin us for a fascinating journey through the history of women, protest and the struggle for equality. From the ancient world to the present day, we will explore changing ideas about women, who they are, and what society has believed they are capable of achieving. We will discover the early feminist voices who challenged the idea of female inequality and demanded that women’s rights be recognised as human rights. We’ll consider how these challenges to patriarchy were resisted for generations, before turning to the suffragettes of the nineteenth century. Beginning with peaceful protest, they ultimately adopted more radical tactics when faced with continued resistance from the establishment.Together, we’ll trace how women’s rights were won and explore the continuing history of protest in the UK, including the Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1970s, Reclaim the Night, the Greenham Common Peace Camp, and the campaigns that followed. Bringing the story right up to the present day, we’ll examine #MeToo, protests and vigils following the M**der of Sarah Everard, SPYCOPS, violence against women and girls (VAWG), and ongoing protests around gender and ethnicity pay gaps. Focusing on policing, their work examines police culture, stop and search, and the resilience of policewomen navigating systemic challenges. Their scholarship contributes significantly to the history of women’s integration into policing. A frequent media commentator, she has featured in The Guardian, i News, Sky News, and the BBC.
