Coinciding with the paperback launch of A Mystery of Remnant and Other Absences (Swan River Press, 2026), edited by Victor Rees and Iain Sinclair, the exhibition will bring together a selection of paintings from the final few decades of Catling’s life which inscribe his sustained interest in image-making. Numerous of these works have not been exhibited previously.Whilst predominantly known for his sculpture, performance art and writing, the delicate, luminous and sometimes obstructive medium of egg tempera enabled Catling to operate within a different form of visualized language. The egg tempera icons painted by Catling infer subtle presences, shifting between concealment and revelation. Emanuel Swedenborg provides some occasional ciphers: in 2022, one of four egg tempera works Catling displayed at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition was titled, An orm with Noah’s proof beneath Swedenborg’s flying machine.Staged as the fourth event in a long series of collaborations between Swedenborg House and Brian Catling, That Large Ghost reflects an enduring connection of shared sensibilities, pulling together iterations across image, text, voice and place. He is particularly renowned for his Vorrh series of novels, consisting of The Vorrh, The Erstwhile and The Cloven. With Iain Sinclair he devised a trilogy of staged interventions at Swedenborg House, co-authoring the Swedenborg Society publication Several Clouds Colliding (2012). Until 2017 he was Professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford.Jack Catling is a London-based artist working through performance and film to examine disruptions of gesture and sign.
