The Human side of Testing
If you were to believe the clickbait articles and posts, ‘Artificial Intelligence and automation will soon replace the humble tester in every facet of development’. ‘Our roles will soon be as trainers of the machines or non-existent altogether’. Do you believe this? Scott Logic doesn’t. The human side of development is hard enough for humans, how are we to train the machines to “take over” empathy, consideration, doing the right thing at the right time and being inclusive? All things that make good software GREAT or if omitted, turns your software into news for the wrong reasons.
So how do we as human testers get better at the human side of testing? One way is to go and talk to others working in the industry who have considered these questions and listen to what they have to say. With that in mind, please join us for our first London ‘Test Brekkie. Our talks will cover managing relationships with your colleagues, balancing your own time and give an eye-opening perspective of diversity and inclusion. The talks will focus on utilising your humanity to become a first-class tester within a machine lead industry and offer some solutions to common people problems.
Bacon/egg/sausage sandwiches, fresh fruit, coffee and orange juices will be provided, and we can also cater for Vegans (If you have dietary requirements, please let us know).
We are proud to introduce two Scott Logic stars in Callum Akehurst-Ryan (Senior Test Engineer – London) and Cian McCormack (Senior Test Engineer – Newcastle). The event will be hosted by our Lead Engineer, Elizabeth Fiennes.
Callum is a Senior Test Engineer at Scott Logic who joined the team in Sept 2018, having previously worked at eBay.
With over 10 years of experience within testing; Callum has distinguished himself through excellent relationship building skills and a real passion for diversity and inclusion. Callum is always open to topical debates and is active in the Testing community, having recently talked at TestBash and ran a workshop at the ZeroLight QA career day to show school kids about the possibilities of a career in testing.
Callum also sporadically blogs about his adventures in testing: https://callumakehurstryansblog.wordpress.com/
Cian has been testing at SL for 1.5 years now, previously of Virgin Money. He advocates strongly for the understanding of the “softer side” of testing, while also ensuring that testers are firmly embedded at the heart of the development process. Modern Testing Principles are the heart of every conversation he has and decision he makes. He has previously spoken at MoT meetups, Agile meetups, and most recently at the highly sought-after Leeds Test Atelier.
Techie Brekkie is series of Scott Logic talks. Each time, we will cover a different topic providing an opportunity to share and learn. Everyone is encouraged to take part, not just as an attendee but also as a presenter.
*Test Brekkie is an event for Testers, by Testers.
