- **Event Name**: Symposium | Orchidaceae | Taxonomy, Diversification, and Biogeography
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 25 Nov, 2026 at 09:30 am – Wed, 25 Nov, 2026 at 06:00 pm (+00:00)
- **Event Description**: Bringing together contributions that advance our understanding of orchid evolution across taxonomic, temporal, and geographical scales.About this EventThis is a hybrid day meeting, offering the option of in-person tickets or online. This day meeting supports a Special Issue in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean SocietyOrchids (Orchidaceae), with nearly 30,000 accepted species worldwide, are the largest family of angiosperms and one of the most ecologically and morphologically remarkable lineages in the plant kingdom.Orchids occupy an extraordinary diversity of habitats across all continents except Antarctica, displaying exceptional variation in life form, pollination biology, mycorrhizal associations, reproductive strategies, and genomic architecture. Their immense diversity and global distribution make them an ideal system for investigating the processes that generate, structure, and maintain plant biodiversity through time and space. At the same time, the family has a complex taxonomic history, shaped first by contrasting interpretations of morphological variation and more recently, by different perspectives arising from DNA-based classifications. This symposium will bring together diverse cutting-edge perspectives on orchid evolution, across taxonomic, temporal, and geographical scale.SpeakersRichard M. The call for papers for the special issue closes on 31 August 2027.SponsorsThis event is generously supported by the Swiss Orchid Foundation at the Herbarium Jany Renz, Basel, Switzerland, with special thanks to its President, Dr Roland P. "description": "The Linnean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society. Founded in 1788, the Society takes its name from the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) whose botanical, zoological and library collections have been in its keeping since 1829. As it moves into its third century the Society continues to play a central role in the documentation of the world’s flora and fauna – as Linnaeus himself did – recognising the continuing importance of such work to biodiversity conservation.Members are drawn from all walks of life, and represent the full range of professional scientists and amateurs alike with an interest in natural history. The Fellowship is international and includes world leaders in each branch of biology who use the Society's premises and publications to communicate new advances in their fields."
