This talk explores the ‘Albert Park’ scheme, a 467-acre proposal conceived as a northern counterpart to Victoria Park, stretching from Highbury to Seven Sisters Road and encompassing a largely undeveloped area that would later be built over with the Victorian streets that now form a significant part of Stoke Newington. Nearly four times the size of the eventual Finsbury Park, this immense park would have absorbed the site of the future Clissold Park, bringing meadows and reservoirs together in one vast open-space landscape. Mapping the ghost of a park that never was, this talk reveals how the scheme that ultimately evolved into Finsbury Park might have transformed the Stoke Newington landscape we know today.Amir Dotan () is a local historian focused on the history of Stoke Newington. Since 2012, he has researched and shared local history through social media (, ), talks, and community projects. In 2016, he founded , a regular event featuring speakers on the area’s past.Heritage at Risk in Stoke Newington by Rob Briggs https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events3/banners/2cd791f0-748a-11f1-b452-0f2e0e513fce-rimg-w1200-h432-dca9a9a6-gmir.jpg Stoke Newington has a centuries-old tradition of acting to preserve its historic buildings and open spaces when they come under threat: think St Mary’s Old Church, Clissold Park and Abney Park. Problems with neglect and proposals for insensitive changes to heritage assets persist. Hackney consistently ranks among the London boroughs with the highest number of entries in Historic England’s annual Heritage at Risk Register, and Stoke Newington accounts for a fair share of these. This talk will survey Stoke Newington’s at-risk built heritage, outline some of the wider issues at play, and highlight how The Hackney Society is working to improve understanding and protection of heritage assets across the borough.Rob Briggs is a trustee of (www.hackneysociety.org) and chair of its .Women from Hackney’s History: Stoke Newington – Part Two by Sue Doe https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events7/banners/2d162190-748a-11f1-b452-0f2e0e513fce-rimg-w1200-h444-dc050504-gmir.jpg Following her appearance at the 20th Stoke Newington History Talks event in 2023, Sue Doe returns with a new collection of remarkable women featured in the forthcoming third volume of the series. After the success of the first two books , Sue is now researching another group of women whose lives intersected with Stoke Newington and the wider Hackney area. This talk will introduce Ethel Cox, a pioneer of fashion education whose influence helped shape generations of designers; one of Britain’s first female accountants; a First World War munition worker who also excelled on the football pitch; and a Salvation Army member whose death was linked to violence from the anti-Salvationist “Skeleton Army”. Sue will also explore the stories of two women connected to the Kray twins, the notorious “Poisonous Sisters”, the Stoke Newington links of Sinéad O’Connor, and the origins of the intriguingly named Sweetaople Hoyse on Stoke Newington Church Street.Sue Doe is a local historian and researcher. Currently teaching the first group of Hackney Guiding Students, leading walks and working on another book.Testimonials"Loved your street signs talk last night. In fact all the presenters were great. Thank you so much for your dedication and energy in setting these evenings up." (Graeme)"That was a wonderful evening last night. You said it would be special and it was. That chap James talking about electricity he is a star! How can anyone make substations sound interesting. Brilliant. And Mark was just great too. So relaxed and cool and calm. To think that Stokey looked like that at the time I was spending time there. I do not remember anything … we just used to go to the pubs and hear music. No cameras with us of course." (Rachel)"Thank you Amir for the wonderful talk tonight. It was all so interesting! Mark and James were great too so please pass on thanks to them for sharing. Look forward to the next one." (Amanda)"We thoroughly enjoyed your last gig, we were treated to so much information – too much for my aged brain to retain, so I’m looking forward to seeing the video of the event to refresh my memory." (Alan)"Many thanks again for an excellent event. You and your guests help us enjoy and appreciate our common local history and urban landscape in massively entertaining ways."
