The screening will be followed by a conversation and Q&A with director Joy Stacey. Developed with Palestinian women living in the West Bank between 2016-2022, She the Steadfast is a research film inspired by indigenous dress culture. Presenting a layered history of gender and identities in occupied Palestine, five collaborative women's theatre performances are stitched together with patchwork clips of archival materials from Palestine, Palestinian diaspora and international media.With collaborative theatre from Mariam, Su'ad, Nawal, Nihayah, Fadwa and Yara. Featuring original performances from Hanin Tarabay and Asmaa Azaizeh, and archival footage from UNRWA photo and film archive for Palestine refugees.With grateful thanks to the Palestinian artists, filmmakers, writers and performers sampled in the film.This is a not-for-profit film made with support from CHASE. Post-study development supported by Arts Council England.Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1088731484?share=copy#t=0Joy Stacey is a collaborative, multimedia researcher and producer, and completed their practice based PhD 'After The Last Stitch: Palestinian Dresses and Anticolonial Feminist Filmmaking' at Sussex in 2023, with a CHASE scholarship. Joy's research explores feminist, queer and decolonial approaches to collaboration in media and research. Their PhD film انتي صامدة (She the Steadfast) (2023) is inspired by Palestinian dressmaking culture. In this film, five collaborative women's theatre performances are stitched together with patchwork clips of film, text and sound made by Palestinian creatives and thinkers, as well as some international media, in an exploration of Palestinian women's present day lives and cultural histories. In other recent work Joy co-produced short film 'Mapping 'The Streets'' (2024) with Dr Baljit Kaur, exploring experiences of violence among young women of colour in East London, and co-edited archival oral histories and photo book 'Treat Me Like Your Mother: Trans* Histories from Beirut's forgotten past' (2022), with Mohamad Abdouni.
