The Royal Society Africa Prize 2025 is awarded to Professor Ara Monadjem for unwavering dedication to African biodiversity research and conservation.
Professor Monadjem is a biodiversity specialist with a focus on the ecology and conservation of African mammals and birds. He specialises in field-based studies where the objectives are either to obtain biological and taxonomic insights on rare and threatened species, or to understand the ecological roles and ecosystem functions provided by these species in natural and agricultural landscapes.
He is Head of the Department of Zoology & Entomology at the University of Pretoria, is on the board of Global South Bats, in which he heads its Africa Regional Liaison committee, and has published widely including 8 books and more than 220 scientific articles.
